Southern Fried Cabbage with Bacon

  • 4 slices thick bacon, (or 6 slices regular bacon) cut into ½-inch pieces
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 1 small head green cabbage, cored and chopped into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 tsp. light brown sugar
  • Kosher salt
  • Fresh ground black pepper
  • Freshly chopped parsley leaves, for serving


  1. In a large heavy-bottomed skillet, cook bacon until crisp, 5-7 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon onto a paper towel–lined plate.  Leave drippings in skillet
  2. Add diced onion to the skillet and cook on medium-high heat until translucent, about 7 minutes.
  3. Add chopped cabbage and brown sugar. Season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until cabbage tender, about 5 minutes.
  4. Return bacon to skillet and toss with cabbage. Cook 1 minute to heat through. Top with parsley before serving.
