The neighborhood grocery store you know and love has deep roots right here in Houston. Food Town got its start in late 1993 when lifelong groceryman and Aggie alum Ross Lewis gathered six business associates together for a mission: To offer national-brand products, quality meats and fresh produce at competitive prices. Armed only with personal seed money and the support of long-time vendor partners, they opened Food Town No. 1 in Pasadena on April 28, 1994.
Two other locations opened the following month, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Food Town grew into 16 stores, taking over space as other business exited, and continued that growth with the 2015 purchase of the Gerland’s grocery chain. Today we are an independent grocer with 30 Houston-area locations, all boasting maroon and white in honor of our Aggie heritage. Food Town has consistently been named among the Houston Business Journal’s list of Largest Family-Owned Businesses, as well as the Houston Chronicle’s “Chronicle 100” list of largest area grocery stores. Recently, Food Town was voted as one of the best Houston grocery stores by the Houston Press.
We owe much of our success to the incredible people we work with each day. Strong relationships with vendors and suppliers allow us to provide money-saving deals, while our talented team members always go above and beyond. And none of it would be possible without our wonderful customers. Of course, it also helps that, at our roots, we’re grocery people.
Our company got its start with Ross, who spent his entire career — more than 55 years — in the same industry. He worked with four different grocery chains, two of which he led, all in the Houston area. His love of serving others is something he passed down to his sons Randy and Mike. Both sons pursued careers in the grocery world, and Mike is our current Food Town president. With many of our company’s original people still at the reins, we are proud to be your neighborhood grocery store. At Food Town, it’s your town.
Please Note: Named businesses operating inside of Food Town locations are independently owned and operated, and are in no way affiliated with the Food Town brand. This includes, but is not limited to, bakery and floral departments, movie rental kiosks and coin services.
