Freezing temperatures, icy roads and unexpected power outages can create dangerous conditions across Houston. Stand prepared with the following tips — and remember, ready.gov offers advice to help you prepare for a full range of emergency scenarios.
Never use stoves, ovens or grills for heat — they produce deadly carbon monoxide. Use approved space heaters only, keep them three feet from flammables and ensure proper ventilation.
Stock nonperishable food, water, flashlights, blankets, warm clothes, medications, first aid supplies and batteries. Add hand warmers, a manual can opener and comfort items for extended outages.
Wrap exposed pipes, cover outdoor faucets, drip indoor faucets and open cabinets during freezes. Bring plants inside or cover them, and keep pets warm indoors with limited outdoor time.
Fill your gas tank, charge devices and battery packs, and carry cash. Check tire pressure and fluids, keep the tank half full, and store an ice scraper and blanket.
Follow trusted weather updates, keep a battery-powered radio on hand and monitor city advisories before, during and after the freeze.
