Food Town Makes Changes Due to COVID-19 Pandemic

The Shelby Report

As part of the ongoing response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Food Town has made some changes throughout its 30-store chain in the greater Houston, Texas, area.

Shannon Crawley, marketing and communications specialist with Food Town, offered The Shelby Report a briefing of the situation on March 24.

“As far as what we’re doing for the community, this week we went to where we have senior hour,” Crawley said. “Monday through Sunday, we open an hour early for seniors. From 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., they’re able to come in and shop without having the massive crowds. And that is just to kind of limit their exposure to the younger crowds and a mass of people.

“They can come in and buy what any other customer can buy. It’s been very well received. Seniors love it. It’s been a great response. The stores are pretty busy every morning, and then we open up to the general public at 8 a.m. It’s been working well.”

Crawley went on to explain that the company had just recently launched its first app, which has proved timely.

“You can download it from Google or at the App Store. It’s Houston Food Town and we’ve done some exciting things,” she said.

Among the offerings are a weekly digital coupon. To date, deals have included gallons of milk for 99 cents and savings on 24-packs of Niagara bottled water.

“We’ve had a great response from members joining,” Crawley said. “They love the app, they love the coupons. Besides our digital deals, you can also download the manufacturers’ coupons through our weekly ad … it’s easy to use and everything’s working great.”

In addition, Food Town earlier this year launched a partnership with Shipt grocery delivery. Consumers can go online, place an order and have it delivered.

“We’re trying (to help),” Crawley said. “We’re hoping to help the community out and help everybody kind of ease their way through this situation.”
