2024 marked a milestone year for Food Town — the 30th anniversary of our April 1994 opening in Pasadena. As we’ve looked back on the memories made and all the ways our independent grocery chain has grown through the years, we’ve been grateful to have media outlets in our hometown and throughout the grocery industry help tell our story.

Houston Chronicle: At 30, Houston’s Food Town Has No Plans to Compete with H-E-B. Here’s How it Stays in Business Food Town has no coffee shops, deli counters or floral departments, and at 30 years old, no plans to change the original layout from its first location, which opened in Pasadena in 1994.
That’s all part of the strategy that has helped the Houston-based grocery company grow to 29 locations, with an emphasis on tailoring each store to serve the needs of its communities as grocery superstores such as H-E-B and Kroger continue to redesign and expand their markets.
“Houston is one of the most diverse cities in the nation, so there are people from all over the world who come here, and they all have different appetites,” said Mike Lewis, the company’s president. “It’s too much to cater to everyone, so we do our best to cater to our communities and our neighborhoods. If someone wants something, we will try to get it.”
Community Impact: Food Town Celebrates 30-Year Milestone Serving Houston Communities Food Town’s first location opened April 28, 1994, at 2040 South Richey St., Pasadena, by lifelong grocer Ross Lewis and six associates. The store now has 29 locations in the Greater Houston area, according to the news release.
With a focus on providing affordable access to national brands and high-quality products, the team ensured their success by housing their stores in pre-existing retail locations with products catering to the surrounding neighborhoods, according to the release.
“These guys didn’t just have the grocery business in their blood, but they had Houston’s best interests at heart,” Food Town President Mike Lewis said in the release. “They put thought into everything from the prices they offered to where they did business.”
